A Checklist of Some of the Best Hikes in the Gatlinburg Area
Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, strolling scenic riversides, or climbing rugged peaks, Gatlinburg offers hikes for every kind of explorer. With so many paths to choose from, narrowing it down can be difficult, which is why we’ve put together this list of our favorites.
- The Alum Cave Trail is a roughly 11-mile round-trip path that finishes at the top of Mount LeConte. This hard hike features dramatic scenery of Arch Rock, Alum Cave Bluffs, and Inspiration Point.
- The Rainbow Falls Trail intersects the Alum Cave Trail near LeConte Lodge. The moderately strenuous hike is about 5.6 miles round-trip and takes you to the park’s tallest single-drop waterfall.
- If you choose the Trillium Gap to Grotto Falls trail, you’ll get to explore a trail that passes behind the 30-foot waterfall. Your journey on the about 3-mile path takes you through an old-growth forest.
- For an easy hike, try the Laurel Falls Trail, one of the most accessible waterfall hikes. The 2.6-mile round-trip path follows a paved trail to a picturesque 60-foot cascade.
- The Chimney Tops Trail has a short but steep ascent. However, the 4-mile route, known for its rigorous climb to rocky outcrops, is worth it for the panoramic views at the top.
- A great day hike option is the Charlies Bunion via Appalachian Trail. Measuring about 8 miles, the route traverses multiple peaks, including Masa Knob and Mount Amber.
- Another hike featuring a stunning waterfall is the Cataract Falls Trail, which is only a mile out and back. This is a great option for those hiking with children.
- Make your way along the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River on the Gatlinburg Trail. The flat, scenic walk starts at the Sugarlands Visitor Center and is 1.9 miles one-way.
- The Cucumber Gap and Little River Loop Trail is a moderate hike that takes about two to three hours to complete. Your journey takes you along the Little River and through a quiet wooded corridor with seasonal floral displays.
