The Ultimate Guide to Hiking in Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg is one of those vacation destinations that is suited for groups of all ages and interests. Whether planning the ultimate family summer vacation or an intimate trip for two, this Smoky Mountain town has something for everyone, including memorable outdoor activities. One of the best ways to surround yourself in Mother Nature’s beauty during your stay at The Park Vista is on a local trail. With so many trails to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones are right for you. To help make planning your adventures easier, we’ve put together this guide to hiking in Gatlinburg that breaks trails into three groups.

Trails for Beginners

Hiking is one of those activities that you don’t need a lot of experience to enjoy. However, if you haven’t done much hiking before your trip, we recommend sticking to shorter or easier paths, including these three options.

  1. One of the most popular easy trails in the area is the Gatlinburg Trail. The two-mile out-and-back path crosses creeks through stunning wooded scenery.
  2. Another great option is the Twin Creeks Trail. While clocking in at 4.5 miles, it is still a relatively easy trail that winds its way through a scenic forest.
  3. For an easy waterfall hike, check out Cataract Falls. The roughly one-mile trip can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Hike to Gatlinburg Waterfalls

Speaking of waterfalls, there are plenty of them to discover on your Gatlinburg escape. Here are three of our favorite ones to explore.

  1. Rainbow Falls is a stunning 80-foot waterfall that is one of the most popular destinations in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s roughly a 5.4-mile round-trip hike to reach the falls.
  2. There’s also Grotto Falls, which requires a moderate 2.6-mile round-trip hike. The trail actually takes you behind the waterfall for a unique experience.
  3. Found off the Roaring Fork Motor Trail, the hike to Baskin Creek Falls takes you through the woods. At the end, take in views of the 40-foot, two-tiered waterfall.

Family-Friendly Trails

If you’re visiting on a family vacation, you need options that are suitable for kids of all ages. Those traveling with older children may be interested in longer paths, while those with younger children may prefer a shorter route.

  1. Gatlinburg SkyPark is home to several trails perfect for families looking to enjoy scenic views without a demanding hike.
  2. The Alum Cave Bluffs trail is a great option, as the bluff shelter portion is a great turnaround point for families who don’t want to go for the full summit push.
