What Is This Community?

The Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community, also called the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, is only about 15 minutes away from the hotel. Before 1937, artists and crafters worked on their pieces throughout the city. They often did their work out on the street, where visitors could watch them develop their creations. Around 1937, John Cowden and others left downtown for the Glades, which many called home.

Over time, more artists set up shop in the Glades, and the idea for this community was planted. In 1982, the Knoxville World’s Fair attracted over 11 million people, and many of them discovered the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community.

What Can You Discover on Your Visit?

Today, almost 100 artists and craftsmen, wedding chapels, restaurants, and more make up this community that’s getting closer and closer to being 100 years old. For convenience, there is a dedicated trolley route, the yellow one, or you can drive yourself out to this area. Everything you need on your visit is located within an eight-mile loop.

While exploring the community, you can find everything from glass to leather to woodcarving and everything in between. This range of wares means there is something for everyone and every occasion.
